A LESSON FROM CONNECTICUT

Our minds become incredibly curious with attractive flashes of complicated information in a seemingly small environment. This is the selling strategy and what pushes creativity to its edge in modern technology. Exploration becomes the game and survival in the modern world is strictly measured by it. “Can you keep up with change?” becomes the most important question from an employer.

One should naturally think that with the advancement in modern technology which has increased the level of social life and bridged relationships among individuals and groups, self awareness and self esteem should follow the upward trend, but
ironically, the opposite has been the case.

More than ever before, people have continually mutilate their self esteem and neglect self awareness to ‘feed’ selves with the assumed lives they see or feel others live on the other side of the screen. People more than ever before want to imitate what they assume is life of other people in a separate ‘world’ especially in the entertainment industry and the implication is what we now deal with in form of different kinds of crime and ‘mental disorderliness’.

I read like everyone did about the Newton High School merciless case of murder in Connecticut, USA and I had a glimpse on Adam Lanza’s brief history. Although he had reports of psychological problem and was even assigned a psychologist while in school, his unforgiving action of taking the lives of 20 little kids, 6 women including his mother and lastly taking his own life cannot be totally disconnected to the fact that the world is going through a lot of changes which comes with its challenges and which we all have different capacity to handle.

When one can’t live the life he sees and cherishes, there are higher tendencies that such person begins to hate self and everything around… when he adores a hero so much to want to instantly be with him/her, there are tendencies to start becoming desperate.

I have seen cases where people beg and even threaten to take their own lives if a public figure refuses to tweet back. Ladies have gone to the extent of stripping selves just to get attention on the social network (twitter).  These are the different ways people have been learning and managing to handle these changes.
Things can get more calamitous if the right words are not spoken to people. And the right words are simply the teachings of self awareness and more importantly, the development of self esteem--- this is the kind of exploration I meant.

Centuries ago, it was the exploration of the surface of the earth, then to the core of it and now, it is a more different form of exploration… exploration of the inner self.
