There is one very simple way a non-social addiction can be
stopped and I will be going straight to the point to explain this so as to make
it even simpler.
What you’ve got to do
as someone addicted to a habit is to imagine you are putting the bad habit
somewhere away from yourself. Do not imagine you’re putting it in a locker; the
urge for it will make you open it or even break it up. Throwing it outside?
Nah, of course you will just have to go outside to find it when you need it.
You shouldn’t imagine throwing it to the sea either; you wouldn’t believe how
deep you can swim until you have your addiction sitting at the bottom of the
sea.
Do you have a mirror? ------ Yes! What you’ll do is to
simply imagine you are putting your addiction behind
“Do I really need
this?”
“What will be the end of this?”
“Can I live without
this?”
Make sure you ask these questions while seriously
considering who you are as a family member, as a member of a group, as an
individual and or your status in a society. If after these questions, you still
feel like picking up your imaginary bad habit behind the mirror, feel free! Go and pick it as if you’re
actually picking something behind the mirror but do not forget to come back and
place it where you picked it. Now, after you’re through with the habit and
placing it back, take a look at yourself again, if you feel like talking; talk.
If you don’t feel like, just make sure you take a critical look at yourself at
least for a minute before leaving. Repeat this play as many times as you have
urge for your addiction. With time you’re going to build two images of yourself
in your memory.
The fact is that, your bad habit is in your memory, it shows
itself physically when you go to the mirror to pick it and you need yourself in
your memory to stop it. That is the miracle that will stop it for you, you need
to see yourself before and after engaging in your addiction as many times as
possible to make you see the two very contradicting persons in you fighting.
To fight the helpless imaginary person who you do not want
to be, you must invite the determined imaginary person who you want to be into
the ring (mind).
The person you see in the mirror when taking your addiction
is the person who you don’t want to be while the person returning the addiction
behind the mirror is the person who you want to be. These two persons clash in
your mind all the time and eventually one of them will win ----- the
‘determined’ usually wins the ‘helpless’.
The continuous practice of an addiction is like mastering an
act towards perfection ---- An act of taking your own life so that when the act
is finally perfected, it easily and perfectly takes life without mistakes.
There is no alley without an exit; this is one exit to
addiction that leaves you with your integrity intact.
